Wandering the World: Menifee, California
You guys. I have no idea what bad luck pill we have swallowed!!!! In some ways, it is bad luck in the best circumstances, but seriously, I could use a break. Storm did a fab job getting us to California. We were thrilled to make it easily over the passes. We were within ONE MILE of arriving at Wilderness Lakes (between LA and San Diego), when Tom was so excited to make it that he took a corner a little too tight and took the camper up over a curb.
Under normal circumstances, this wouldn't seem like a crisis. However, he happened to not notice. Which meant that camper took a bumpy ride. Zach and I immediately noticed that tire was looking bad. It was smoking and totally crooked. We called for Tom (who still had no idea) to PULL OVER!!!
He pulled to the side, looked at it and decided to try and make it the last mile to the campground. It was obvious within a few feet that the tire was going to catch fire. On to plan B.
We called roadside assistance to see if we could have it towed. We had fulltime insurance with Progressive and were paying CRAZY amounts for it, but somehow, we had missed adding roadside assistance? You have got to be joking me.
On to plan C. I took the kids to Tom's parents house. They happen to live in the town we were broke down in. We hung out there while Tom and his dad took the tire off. He originally thought he would try to pull with the tire off, but it was too much weight on the other axles. So he put on the spare and went OH SO SLOWLY to the campground. People kept flagging for him to pull over and telling them about his tire. He appreciated the help, but wondered why people thought he didn't know about it traveling 20 mph on a 65 mph road. Go figure.
All I know is that this looks expensive. Thank goodness we are here for 10 days.
